  • When can I apply for a provisional driving licence?

    You can apply for your provisinal driving licence at any time once you’re over 15 years and nine months old, but it only becomes valid when you turn 16, At 16 you can begin the process of learning to ride a moped or light quad bike and if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) then you can start learning to drive at 16, otherwise you will have to wait till you are 17 to begin the process of learning to drive a car.

  • How do I apply for my first full driving licence?

    You can apply for your provisional driving licence online or by completing the D1 application form which is available from the DVLA form ordering service or your local Post Office.  You will also need to enclose original documentation confirming your identity, a passport style colour photograph and the fee of £43.00 by cheque or postal order payable to DVLA (do not send cash). Send your completed application and payment to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD.  Postal applications take up to 3 weeks.

  • How much does a provisional driving licence cost?

    Your first provisional driving licence will cost you £34.00 if applying online or £43.00 for postal applications (Fees effective from 31st October 2014).

  • I need to change the date or time of my theory test?

    You can move your booking to an earlier or later date, if a slot is available online. You'll be able to search for a new test date or change the test centre where you are taking your test. You can only change bookings that are confirmed.  You need to give at least three clear working days notice before your test date to avoid losing your test fee.

  • What is the pass mark for the Theory Test?

    The pass mark is 43 out of 50 for the multiple choice part and 44 out of 75 for the hazard perception part, remember you need to reach the pass mark for both parts at the same time in order to pass your theory test.

  • What if I am Dyslexic or have other reading difficulties?

    If you are dyslexic or have other reading difficulties you can ask for an English voiceover and request to have up to double time for the multiple choice part of the test.

  • Do I need to pass my theory before I start lessons?

    No, you can start driving lessons first, your instructor can give you help or advice on both parts of the theory test.

  • How do I book my practical driving test?

    The quickest and easiest way to book your practical driving test is to use the online booking service, you can use the online booking service between 6.00 am and midnight, Monday to Sunday.  However it's best to check with you driving instructor they will discuss with you when the time is right, and will often book it for you.

    If you learn to drive with a driving instructor then you will take your test in the instructor's car, the examiners do not supply a car for the test.

  • How many driving faults can I get and still pass?

    You will pass your practical driving test if you make 15 or fewer driving faults, and no serious or dangerous faults.

  • How many lessons does it take to pass a driving test?

    Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice.  Learners who prepare this way, with a combination of plenty of professional training and plenty of practice, do better in the test.
